Emergency ballast replacement is a compatibility job. The right replacement depends on the existing fixture, lamp or LED load, voltage, output, wiring method, dimensions, and required emergency runtime. Ordering from a photo alone is risky.

What an emergency ballast does

An emergency ballast provides backup operation for compatible lamps when normal power is lost. In LED systems, a comparable role may be handled by an emergency LED driver. The terms are often mixed in the field, so start by identifying the old component and the fixture it serves.

Ballast vs LED driver

  • Fluorescent emergency ballasts are matched to specific lamp types and fixture wiring.
  • Emergency LED drivers are matched to LED loads, output requirements, and driver compatibility.
  • A standard operating ballast or LED driver is not automatically an emergency backup device.
  • Ballasts and drivers should be matched by electrical and fixture details, not just wattage.

Specs to match

  • Input voltage and output rating.
  • Lamp type, LED load, or fixture family.
  • Emergency lumen output or wattage.
  • Battery type and replacement availability.
  • Case dimensions and mounting space.
  • Wiring diagram, test switch, and indicator light requirements.

Failure symptoms

Common symptoms include failed test operation, weak emergency output, old batteries that no longer hold charge, missing indicator lights, swollen battery packs, or fixtures that operate normally but fail during backup testing.
